When launching our eco-friendly bauble ranges within the Australian Botanical and Marsupial Collection, we wanted to ensure that every aspect of the product was ethical and sustainable.
We have always taken into account the impact our brand has on the environment when creating our products. Our candle gift sets only utilize soy wax and are set in reusable glass jars whilst our tote bag range, created to eliminate single use plastic, is made from only unbleached cotton.
With our eco-friendly baubles, we focused on 3 key areas: 1) Sustainable Raw Materials 2) Reducing Waste 3) Ethical Labour
Sustainable Raw Materials. The base of the bauble is made from recycle paper, rice plant fibres and then combined with vegetable starch giving it a sturdy composition making it even stronger than ceramic pieces. We also opted for only non-toxic paints, untreated jute (to thread the bauble) and only used recycled cardboard for the tags.
Reducing Waste. The raw materials we chose to work with (recycled paper, rice fibres) would have been dumped in landfills, if we had not repurposed them. Our retailers are also only supplied eco-friendly packaging options , with gift boxes are made of untreated cardboard and unbleached tissue paper.
Ethical Labour. As our hand-painted baubles are labour intensive , it took a couple years to find our current supplier. A small family of artisans who have been painting and creating for almost 70 years in India, their skills have been passed down from generations back. During covid, our artisans continued working in the safety of their homes whilst still being earn a wage to support their families.
As we look forwards, as a brand we are committed to finding more ways to integrate environmental and social considerations into every new product launch. We also hope had other brands take a similar approach, as we only have one planet.
